why genetic matching doesn’t work for women on birth control pills

Unfortunately, women who take hormonal birth control can’t use our matching service.


This type of birth control comes in several forms, including “The Pill,” patches, implants, and injections. Such birth control effectively tricks the female body into thinking it’s pregnant.


As described here, the theory is that we're more attracted to others who have different immune systems from ourselves.


However, women on The Pill seem to be more attracted to those that are similar. Instead of being attracted to people with very different immune system genes, women on The Pill are more attracted to people with very similar immune system genes.


When a woman is pregnant, she seems drawn to her immediate family. The evolutionary theory is that, in the wild, pregnant females can’t count on their babies’ fathers to stick around and help raise their young. A more reliable support system for such mothers is their own immediate family. So nature draws them closer together.


The good news is that the effects of hormonal birth control are not permanent. So, if you’re a woman on The Pill, we can still help you enjoy the incredible experience of chemistry—but only if you use a different form of contraception.
